How to calm and conceal rosacea on the face

It’s estimated that rosacea affects as many as one in 10 people in the UK, causing their face to flush and flare up, particularly around the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. If, like Cameron Diaz, Prince William and Renée Zellweger who are all believed to suffer from the chronic inflammatory condition, you experience symptoms such as visible blood vessels and broken capillaries, skin becoming red and sore, bumpy spots and pustules, it may be disheartening to learn that there’s no cure for rosacea. There are ways to calm your symptoms and conceal a flare-up though.

The calm before the concealer

While it’s not known exactly what causes rosacea – it has been linked with genetics, environmental factors, bacteria in the gut and the immune system – some triggers that can make it worse have been identified.

As the skin is a reactive mechanism, it can be affected by both internal and external factors. It is also key in protecting you from external aggressors such as the sun and pollution. Keeping it healthy can therefore be the difference between a happy complexion and an unwanted flare-up.

With sun damage and a weakened skin barrier thought to encourage irritants to enter the skin and free radical damage, which can intensify inflammation and cause the skin to flush, wearing a high protection, broad-spectrum sunscreen when you’re exposed is essential.

Avoiding alcohol, stress, spicy foods and hot drinks, extreme temperatures and skincare that may irritate can also prevent unwanted blushing and bumps linked to rosacea.

Using a gentle daily cleanser and hydrating moisturiser that traps in water can help to maintain your skin’s natural balance and improve its barrier function to calm unwanted redness.

It’s a cover-up

To conceal your blushes there’s also colour-corrective makeup.

As well as featuring our Mineralizing Water to provide 24-hour hydration, this Vichy foundation has SPF 35 in it to help protect you from the sun – one of the main triggers of rosacea on the face.

For best results to conceal rosacea skin, use with the Vichy Dermablend SOS Concealer Stick and Setting Powder. The Vichy Dermablend SOS Concealer Stick also provides up to 16 hours of full coverage and its allantoin-enriched formula help soothes skin redness and irritation. Our colourless Dermablend Setting Powder provides a matte, smudge and water-resistant finish to seal your foundation in place.
