The best skincare routine, recommended by a dermatologist

What order should I use my skincare?
So you’ve invested in the products you need for your skin type, but you’re not sure which order they should be applied in. To help you create the perfect skincare routine, Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist shares her expert advice on how and when to apply each product.

1.Remove eye makeup

As a main rule of thumb, you should apply your skincare starting from thinnest to thickest. Therefore, the first step in your skincare routine should be an eye-makeup remover – if you are cleansing in the evening. Apply the fluid to a cotton pad and hold over the eye area for 5-10 seconds. This will start to dissolve any hard-to-budge mascara and eyeliner, helping it to be removed easily. Take care to sweep the cotton pad gently over the eyelids and lashes, rather than scrubbing at the eye.

The Vichy Purete Thermale waterproof eye make-up remover removes all kinds of make-up from the lashes and eye lids and is suitable for sensitive skin.

2.Cleanse

The cleanser you use depends primarily on your skin type and concerns. Vichy’s Purete Thermal range includes oils, micellar waters, gels and creams, while wipe-away cleansers tend to offer multiple benefits such as cleansing and toning in addition to removing make up. Creamy cleansers such as Purete Thermal 3in1 should be applied with a slightly damp cotton pad as this will help to avoid dragging the skin.

If you prefer a rinse-off cleanser, wet your face and neck with warm water and apply the product in circular movements with your fingers, avoiding the eye contour area. Rinse thoroughly and pat your skin gently until it’s dry. Try not to rub as this can cause irritation.

3.Exfoliation and masks

Exfoliators and masks should be part of your weekly skincare routine as they can help to remove the dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. This step will also aid the skin’s natural renewal process and help the rest of your skincare products to be absorbed better.

You can also enhance your skincare routine with a face mask. This step will deliver concentrated skincare benefits and create an optimum environment for the skin to regenerate. Vichy has a wide range of masks for every skin concern such as the Mineral 89 Sheet Mask designed to soothe overstressed and tired skin while strengthening its natural defences.

If your skin suffers from blemishes and congestion, you may prefer a clay-based mask such as the Detox Clarifying Charcoal Mask. It helps to clarify and smooth skin affected by pollution and aggressors in the environment with a formula rich in charcoal and kaolin.

Toners

Toners are a great way to enhance the cleansing process as they help to remove excess product while purifying the skin. Some water sprays also contain toning and soothing benefits and can be sprayed directly onto the skin. This will leave the skin feeling cleansed and soothed.

Serums

A serum is a fast-acting and intensive way of addressing a specific skincare concern with a highly concentrated formula. Serums absorb quickly into the skin due to their small molecular structure so are best applied after cleansing. Vichy’s Liftactiv Peptide-C Ampoules and Liftactiv Vitamin C Brightening Corrector are both formulated with Vitamin C. Massage the serum across the whole face in an upward motion, including the neck and avoiding the eye area.

Eye Creams

If you feel that you need an eye cream, ensure you don’t apply too much. A pea-sized amount is about right for each eye. Take care to apply, using your ring finger, around the eye contour area without going inside the orbital bone.

Moisturiser

Your moisturiser should come at the end of your routine and will ensure the skin is equipped with all it needs to perform at its best. By day, your moisturiser should provide the skin with hydration and comfort while restoring skin’s barrier function to help protect skin from external aggressors in the environment. A night moisturiser should comfort the skin and promote an optimal environment for effective cellular renewal that occurs while you sleep. Vichy’s Slow Âge Night Cream and Mask helps to fight the signs of daily urban ageing and is clinically proven to help restore and revitalise skin suffocated by urban aggressors.

Applying your moisturiser can also be a relaxing way to end your routine. Use about a 20-pence-piece sized amount and rub between your fingertips, massaging in circular upwards motions across your face. This will help to stimulate blood flow.

Sun Cream

Finally, always end your skincare regime with a broad spectrum SPF sun cream to protect it from harmful UV rays which are present all year around. Ensure it is applied to the whole face, neck and don’t forget the ears.
