You’ve probably heard beauty journalists and dermatologists talking about the power of acids in skincare. Although they sound a little scary and intimidating, many types, such as salicylic acid, can make some pretty fantastic improvements to your skin. To help you understand about Salicylic acid, and how it works, we’ve simplified it for you here.
What is it?
Salicylic acid (a type of beta hydroxy acid) is often referred to as a multi-tasker as it can be used to help improve a multitude of skin concerns. It’s especially effective at targeting imperfections due to its exfoliating nature which helps unclogs pores and clear blemishes. In basic terms, it’s a great way to calm angry breakout-prone skin.
What does it do for the skin?
Oily skin, blackheads and blocked pores are caused by dead skin cells clustering together. Salicylic acid breaks down these clusters of cells which helps the skin to renew itself and become firmer, plumper and clearer. Salicylic acid works on both the top layer of the skin and inside the pores too, unlike alpha-hydroxy acids that only target the skin’s surface.
How should you use it?
Salicylic acid is safe to use on sensitive skin due to calming properties but may cause a little peeling and redness at first. If this happens, don’t panic - it’s just the exfoliation process in action. After time, your skin will start to look clearer and smoother. If you’re worried about how your skin will react, build up tolerance over time by spacing out the days you apply it and make sure you start with a low concentration.
