WHY IS MY SKIN SO DRY DURING MENOPAUSE?

The top three skin concerns on your menopausal changes list are itchiness, sagging, and dryness. But before we can address the problem at hand, we need to understand why our skin is struggling to retain moisture in the first place.

Lots of us struggle with dry skin during menopause

Dryness is a prominent clinical change during facial skin ageing in women who have reached menopause. Among various dermatological conditions experienced by mature women, dry skin is highly prevalent.

A recent study conducted on 3,875 women aged over 40, all in the postmenopausal stage, revealed that 36.2% of them reported dry skin.

This is caused by decreased levels of oestrogen and progesterone. As women reach their 50's, the pH level of their skin changes, along with water retention capacity. Additionally, metabolic rate slows down which makes it harder for the skin to stay as hydrated, radiant, firm and smooth as in our younger days. Altogether less friendly, that’s for sure...

Exploring the multifaceted symptoms of menopausal dry skin

Symptoms include:

  1. Tight skin after showering or swimming
  2. Flaky or peeling skin
  3. Cracks on hands and feet
  4. Itchy skin
  5. You can notice grey or ashy tones on your skin if you have a darker skin tone

These skin transformations occur when the turnover of the keratinocytes (cells making up 90% of the outermost layer of the skin) decelerates, resulting in the build-up of aged cells on the surface of the epidermis. Consequently, the lipid barrier loses its organisation, leading to a decline in the skins resistance.

Moreover, (the last one for this article, we promise!) the naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid becomes increasingly susceptible to degradation by a specific enzyme known as hyaluronidase, resulting in a gradual deterioration of hydration and firmness. Due to the less structured lipid barrier, dryness becomes a skin concern.

Unlock hydrated skin: key takeaways

  1. Dryness of the skin is a result of reduced oestrogen levels, leading to inadequate hydration.
  2. Imbalanced oestrogen affects your skin's resilience and ability to retain moisture effectively.
