Here’s how hormones can affect your skin

Hormones play a starring role in your skin’s health. Here’s how your hormones can affect your skin at any age, from menopause and dry skin to pregnancy plumpness.

Teenage skin and acne

During puberty, a rise in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone can cause your sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. While sebum helps to keep your skin from drying out, too much of a good thing can sometimes be a bad thing – excess sebum can cause oily skin, enlarged pores, breakouts and acne. To what extent can be helped by your skincare routine though. A gentle cleanser that targets bacteria and helps to keep your pores clear can help to limit breakouts.

Your twenties and thirties

This can be when you start to see some signs of skin ageing, including fine lines forming, dullness and loss of volume. As we age, our body produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid, both of which help to give our skin its plump, hydrated appearance. Depleting collagen, which provides your skin with structure, can also be linked to dry skin, skin losing its elasticity and wrinkles forming. Signs of sun damage caused in our earlier years can also appear now in the form of premature ageing, emphasising why SPF is an essential skincare step at every age.

That pregnancy glow

You’ve probably heard of the infamous ‘pregnancy glow’, but what’s behind it? Thanks to an increase in estrogen, progesterone and blood flowing to the skin during pregnancy, skin can have a flushed, rosier appearance. Faster skin cell turnover can also encourage newer cells to replace dry, older cells, helping to create a plumper, more radiant and smoother complexion. Hormonal and skin changes don’t always end there though. Increased progesterone levels can trigger the overproduction of oil, causing breakouts, and have be linked to excess melanin production, also known as hyperpigmentation, and the appearance of brown blotchy patches most commonly on the cheeks and nose.

Skin changes with menopause

Menopause skin changes are down to changing progesterone and estrogen levels, which is essential for collagen production. As women approach the menopause, declining estrogen levels can result in the loss of about 30% of collagen. That means you can add wrinkles becoming permanent and sagging skin to hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping as some of the potential menopausal symptoms you can expect. Fluctuating hormones can also cause some women to experience blemishes during menopause.

Our Vichy Neovadiol range accommodates your skin’s changing needs. Neovadiol Meno 5 Bi-Serum, formulated with five key actives, targets five key visible signs of menopause on the skin, including increased dryness, dullness, uneven skin tone and texture, and loss of skin elasticity, causing skin to wrinkle and sag. This lightweight formulation helps to intensely nourish, restore comfort and reveal a radiant, more even looking complexion. Apply evening and night and follow with our Neovadiol Compensating Complex day and night creams for best results.
