PeriMenopause

WHAT IS PERIMENOPAUSE?
The time leading up to the Menopause when people can experience irregular periods or other menopausal symptoms. Perimenopause typically lasts 4 to 8 years.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PERIMENOPAUSE?
There are many symptoms associated with perimenopause, not every person will experience symptoms and the experience of symptoms will be different from person to person. Whilst this is not an exhaustive list, symptoms may include: Hot flushes, Night sweats, Loss of sleep, Anxiety, Dizziness, Fatigue, Memory loss, Mind fog, Depression, Headaches, Recurrent UTIs, Joint stiffness, aches and pains, Reduced concentration and Heavy periods.

HOW MAY PERIMENOPAUSE AFFECT YOUR SKIN?
At perimenopause, due to shifts in oestragen levels and associated collagen production decline, the skin can become increasingly dry, tight and irritated. Skin loses overall elasticity and plumpness, causing skin to sag with fine lines and wrinkles appearing more pronounced, particularly around the mouth and eyes.

Post-Menopause

WHAT IS POST-MENOPAUSE
This is the time after menopause. For someone with intact ovaries, this is typically defined as more than 12 months with no periods. If the ovaries have been removed, this is immediately following surgery.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF POST MENOPAUSE?
Menopausal symptoms can last around 4 years after your last period. However, it's important to note that some women experience symptoms for much longer. Post-menopausal symptoms are due to an estrogen deficiency on the bladder and vagina, following bladder and vaginal symptoms most often occurring a few years after the last period, or a few years after stopping HRT. Common symptoms include:

  • Skin can lose firmness and wrinkles may begin to appear
  • Passing urine more often by day and/or by night
  • Discomfort on passing urine
  • Urine infection
  • Leakage of urine
